  Community Involvement

With the approaching Lewis and Clark Bicentennial and estimates of 25 million tourists following the trail small communities reaching 40 miles on each side of the Missouri are thinking of ways to attract tourism to their communities. It has been decided at this time, by seven communities to develop The Private George Shannon Trail.

George Shannon was lost August 26th 1804 near Sioux City and was not found until September 11, 1804 past the mouth of the Niobrara. He was more than likely lost on the Nebraska side since they did most of their hunting on the Nebraska side. He was 18 years old an Irish Protestant and word has it very good horsemen and singer.

Seven Communities have verbally committed to have a wooden statue carved resembling Private George Shannon to put in their communities. Each statue will be different. Crofton Nebraska and the Ponca Tribe have combined efforts and their statue is nearly completed for Crofton. Lindy Nebraska’s statue is almost finished. Joe Serres from Winnetoon Nebraska carved the statues with his chain saw magic.

Other towns that have committed are Verdigre, Niobrara, Winnetoon, Bloomfield and Wausa. Other towns invited to join the trail are: Santee, Creighton and Center. There are other communities that would like to be part of the trail, the general census at the meeting was to limit the trail to 12 communities.

A team committee is being set up to meet once a month to develop this idea, look for funding, educate the public and brainstorm on ideas to get tourists to stay in our communities.

Each town that is participating will need to have at least one representative from their community on this team to bring back information to their Chamber or Community Club.

This is going to be a very big joint effort involving hopefully all of Knox County and possibly part of Cedar, Boyd and Pierce. We will need everyone's support! The Kick off for the Bicentennial is 2003 in Washington. It sounds far off but this project cannot happen overnight.

People please read up on the Lewis and Clark Expedition so you are knowledgeable when talking to tourists. Know what is available in your communities and surrounding area for attractions and camper hookups.
